In Partnership with the Agora Foundation, and
funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Sage
Centre launched a demonstration project in
Ontario to explore models of support and
mentoring to increase the impact and
effectiveness of Ontario's emerging grassroots
groups and social entrepreneurs.
Sage's Learning Circle
Sage has established a Learning Circle of
funders, policy makers academics and legal
experts to examine how Sage Centre's
comprehensive support platform can increase the
impact and effectiveness of non-profits and
emerging charitable initiatives.
Some of the questions we are exploring include:
- How are charitable foundations, United
Ways and government supporting new and
emerging projects and ideas in the sector?
- How are funders approaching trusteeship
issues and support for individuals and
unincorporated groups – what are the good
practices in this work?
- What are the legal, risk management and
governance issues related to such model of
support?
- How do we provide the space and supports
to foster new ideas within a charitable
context and accountabilities without
necessarily imposing traditional
organizational structures?
- Under what conditions could the sector
encourage social entrepreneurs and
grassroots groups to create new programs
under the aegis of larger organizations such
as Sage where financial, human resources,
and fundraising infrastructures already
exist?
- Does the Sage model provide an effective
alternative to the traditional
organizational infrastructure?
By participating in this learning network,
participants may share their organization’s
challenges and lessons learned around funding
and supporting smaller organizations and
individuals.
Collectively we are aiming to identify best
practices as well as systemic constraints to
innovation in the non-profit sector.
